Ni Maris Gabornes
Ano nga ba ang mayroon sa ciudad?
Lumuwas sila para raw umunlad.
Mas maginhawa naman sa probinsya.
Simple, kaunti ang kakompetensya.
Nakakaakit ba ang mga ilaw?
O ang tagumpay ang nakakasilaw?
Maging si Taylor Swift ay na-engganyo.
“Welcome to New York,” ang kanta sa radyo.
Nakakaaliw ba’ng ingay sa kalye?
Gaya ng kaabang-abang na serye.
O sinasadya nila na mabingi?
Upang lungkot kahit pano’y mapawi.
Masaya ba’ng tumira sa gusali?
Naiiba raw nito ang ugali.
Hanggang saan dulot na pagbabago;
Isip? Damit? O pati pagkatao?
Kailangan ba talagang lumisan
Para sa dulo’y walang pagsisihan?
Mga sagot, malalaman ko bukas.
Dahil bukas, ako naman luluwas.

Back-story
I wrote this poem for "Ciudad," the 6th volume of Pluma, the literary folio of San Beda College Alabang - School of Law. This poem is special for me because it describes the process I've been going through for the last couple of years. It's about how getting out of your comfort zone is both frightening and exciting; how the process inevitably involves changes, sacrifices, and goodbyes; how everything can make you feel deep and melancholic emptiness; how you look at the mirror and see a completely transformed individual; and how you persist amid scary uncertainties, constant self-doubt, seemingly endless struggles, and tempting easy way out because you owe it to God and yourself to at least try living up to your potential.
